Today in Transformers history, on 8 August 1986, Transformers the Movie opened in theaters. A tour de force with incredible animation (most of the time) and a classic score and soundtrack, Transformers the Movie introduced audiences to new characters like Hot Rod, Arcee, Ultra Magnus, Galvatron and Unicron, as well as infamously killing off whole swathes of characters from the original 1984 lineup, often in traumatic fashion (the death of Prowl is particularly horrifying).
