One of the great things about this hobby is it seems there’s always something new to learn. 2022 was a stellar year when it comes to rare G1 cartoon production materials becoming available for all to see. 2023 is already continuing the trend with the reveal of the script for the G1 season 3  episode “The Killing Jar”, along with reference artwork!

This is an original production script including handwritten notes by producer Michael Charles Hill.

This script also includes reference artwork for the Quintesson ship. This ship has quite a lineage, originating in concept art for a 1970s Dune adaptation, drawn by artist Chris Foss. Said adaptation would have been directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, and has little to do with the familiar (and underrated) 1984 film. Jodorowsky’s Dune was cancelled, however, the production seems to have morphed into Ridley Scott’s Alien. Artists who moved from the canceled Dune production to Alien include Jean Giraud, H. R. Giger, and Chris Foss who brought along this ship design. The ill-fated ship ended up unused in Alien as well, but it found its way into production materials for the G1 Transformers cartoon.

All these materials come from Wally Burr’s estate, and contributed to the Sunbow Marvel Archive by Ryan King. The Sunbow Marvel Archive is a must-see site dedicated to gathering and preserving production materials from Sunbow Productions, Marvel Productions and their co-production partners. While we’re here for Transformers, the archive isn’t picky. They are gathering everything. No matter your favorite Sunbow/Marvel Productions cartoon, you’ll want to check them out.
